New web space for subsections

By Anonymous - Posted on 17 February 2009

In previous years, the Hursley Club has provided subsections with a subset of the space allocated to the main site for publicity of their subsections. These spaces have provided little more than static HTML pages and throughout the years has proved difficult to update by subsections. The Club appreciates that more and more things are being done online and as a result need to provide better features to its subsections for advertising and keeping in touch with its members.

As part of the creation of the new site, additional features were available which are to be offered to subsections. In the process, subsection sites would still be run on the old server until they were moved onto the new site. The following information was sent to subsections about this move :

If you log into the server to add new files etc, you will need to use the IP address of the old server ( which will still be active for 2 months ) which is 213.232.93.59[/*:m]

http://www.ibmhursleyclub.org.uk/ss// will redirect to the old server. [/*:m]

Over the next few months we will be working with each subsection to migrate their current site over to the new server. We have many options for this and each will provide the subsection with tools that we feel will help to stay in touch with members and advertise to the club. We will be aiming to move 4 subsections every fortnight and so if you wish to be one of the first to make use of these tools, please let andy_feltham@uk.ibm.com know. [/*:m][/list:u]

When a subsection is ready to, their site can easily be moved over to the new server using the following process.

A member of the subsection needs to request the new user id and information for the subsection. This will then be emailed to the individual who can then check they can access the new server. [/*:m]

Once the new server is accessible the process of copying the files can begin. This can be done by using an FTP application and copying the new files into the 'public_html' folder of the new account.[/*:m]

With the files copied, the new site will be accessible via .ibmhursleyclub.org.uk[/*:m]

Once the original site has been configured, the subsection can then look into newer features available to the subsection such as mailing lists, databases, and other tools such as this forum. [/*:m][/list:u]

To request your user account details for the new site, please use the following form http://www.ibmhursleyclub.org.uk/index.php?q=node/404.

Hi, just a quick update to say that subsections should now have SSH access to their accounts. Please post here if there are any issues.

Glad you found the process simple & thank you for your comments. Hopefully this is just the start of a long list of things that the club can offer you to keep in touch with the members of your subsection, and to attract many more!

If any subsection is waiting to try the water - come on in, it's fine! I moved our subsection's pages over without any trouble at all. It just worked. Thanks to Andy Feltham and Co for making it straightforward.

Hi Matt,

Yes the change to the server is a long time coming. I'm pleased you've found the speed better, i'm sure you'll also find the new server allows us to do so much more as well. The account that we have created for each of the subsections are accounts within their own right. They will have access to a control panel from which they can administer users, mailing lists, databases and many other things. SSH and perl / cgi-access should be one of those things however its possible we've not configured the subsections accounts 100% correctly out of the box. However, the chances are that with the new server a lot more will be possible and if you haven't got it at the moment, please feel free to ask and we will be more than happy to see what we can do.

Thanks, Andy
