Ritchie, Richard Boakes, David Vyvyan A strong squad turned up for Hursley Volleyball Clubs first match in the SADVA League Cup at St Marys. Their opponents, 'Roke A', are former League and Cup champions who have
played together for mean seasons. We knew this would be a tough match, but with the squad of setters, Greaves and Barlow and the strong hitters Fazackarley, Ritchie, Hunter and Boakes on court this was going to be a
good battle. The first set started and through the experienced attacker Dave Carr Roke initially caused some problems to the Hursley defence. However, Hursley soon tempered this and in turn through some good attacks
from Ritchie and Fazackarley, and controlled defence cut the lead to a few points. The remainder of the set saw the sides trading points but Hursley never quite caught Roke and so the first set was theirs. Hursley
were unphased by this and as a cohesive unit controlled the second set from the outset. The main setter Duncan Barlow was picking out his hitters well and getting consistent good balls from the back court. The set
finished with a rather lucky attack from Andy Ritchie from a below par reverse set, but in this game they all count. The final team talk before the third set saw Roke A regroup and they won the toss to gain service.
This was for the money and again points were traded with Roke having slightly the upper hand. The middle of the set was even until through several unforced errors Roke gained what was to become an unassailable three
point lead giving them the deciding set. The entire squad can walk away from this match happy with their performance and proud that they had pushed Roke A harder than they ever would have expected. This result proved
that Hursley meant business and could be serious contenders for the League title, but the Cup will have to wait for next year. Besides, there was the League game against TVT in 15 minutes.... 09/11/2001, 9:30 PM. Hursley Vs TVT 2 - 0 Squad : Alasdair Hunter, Howard Greaves, Duncan Barlow, Tony Fazackarley, Andy Ritchie, Emma Reeves, David Rogers, David Vyvyan,
Tom Guinane. TVT is the team which three of our members, Hunter, Barlow and Ritchie played for last year and we knew they would be weakened due to these moves. For this game we played a core squad from the Roke A
match plus several young, up and coming players. Emma Reeves got her first serving opportunity and quickly found spaces in the TVT defence serving Hursley to a 9-1 lead. It quickly became evident that TVT were much
weaker than Hursley and combined with the quality which Hursley had shown in their previous match this would be over quickly. To assure that the less experienced members of the squad got as much match experience, we
substituted all but the setters, Barlow and Fazackarley, to guide the team to victory. Through the conclusion of the first set and during the second set, Hursley dominated with the new players building their confidence
and learning from any mistakes that were made. The setters guided the attacks well and allowed the team confidence to grow. This 2-0 victory bolstered Hursley's position at the head of the League table remaining
unbeaten this season. Our next challenge will be on 23 November when we take on Solent Volleyball Club and also get our first chance to officiate a match.
